An Early Halloween

I have a post about our house that timeline-wise belongs in between this one and the previous one, but I'll post this one first since some before-and-after pictures of the house aren't ready yet.

Halloween for us was last night because the church had a Halloween party at the church building last night.  I'm really not into dressing up for Halloween anymore, but Mc and the kids dressed up.

Mc was Mayhem from Allstate (here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctK0uCnp3GY )
Baby Girl was going to be Mulan because she loves that movie, but all they had for sale were mulan-colored princess style dresses, and that's just not right.  So she's just in a pretty kimono, and Little One is Captain Kirk.

Trick-or-treating around the church hallways

Little One was so tired by the end of this, but he also didn't know how to trick-or-treat.  One person would give him a piece of candy, and at the next "station" he would put that piece of candy in the person's bowl.  It was funny.

Being so tired, it was hard to get a good picture of him because he wouldn't stay still.  This is one of the best I could get.  A lot of people thought he was Spock, but Spock has the pointy ears and his shirt is blue!  Mc understood why people thought he was a butler, but he didn't know how people could think that our boy was Spock.  Ah well, not enough Star Trek fans in the ward, I guess.  ;)

There were little play areas for the kids.  This is Baby Girl trying to golf.  She ended up hitting it backwards, but they gave her a little prize anyway.

Little One is too young and was too tired to enjoy it much, but Baby Girl liked seeing all the costumes and she liked her own kimono.  She got a lot of compliments on her costume, too.  I've thrown away most of the candy she got because I have HUGE issues with giving kids lots of candy, but that's a whole other topic that I won't get into here.  We'll be handing out little boxes of raisins at our door tonight.  ;)  Still, candy aside, last night's party was fun.

Baby Girl's 3rd-Birthday Week

So our Baby Girl's 3rd birthday was a few weeks ago.  I'm just now getting to posting about it because our days have been so different lately, and I'll show you why in a post in the next couple of weeks.

Her birthday was great, and it lasted a few days.  It started off with my parents and one of my sisters and her little boy coming down here a few days before her birthday.  They had fun playing together.

Baby Girl saying hi to Grandpa and her cousin.

Baby Girl and Little One helping Grandma pick up little beads in the dirt (we have no idea how they got there, but they're everywhere in the perimeter of our yard from the previous owner).

Blowing out her candles on her birthday pumpkin pie.  She doesn't know how to blow yet, she ends up making the "F" sound.  I finally helped her blow them out.

Kitchen decorations.  She likes Strawberry Shortcake at the moment.

Those darn wings kept getting in the way of good pictures.  Because she's not used to opening up presents, one of her little friends was helping.  At one point a present was wrapped really well and she couldn't get it, so she walked over to her friend and said, "Will you help me?"  It was cute.

She got some books and toys for her birthday, and one of the things we got her was a 48-piece butterfly jigsaw puzzle.  She's been doing 48-piece puzzles for months now, and she's really good at them.  She was getting pretty tired but she still wanted to fix the puzzle.

After about half an hour of working on it, she did it!

Two days later we went to the Desert Botanical Garden.  Here are the kids and Grandma and Grandpa waiting for me to find parking.

There is a monarch butterfly exhibit at the Garden, and that's what we took the kids to see.  Baby Girl loved watching the butterflies.

Little One kept wanting to touch them, and that's a big no-no, so Mc finally picked him up (arms pinned) and held him so he could see them up close without touching them.

We tried to get him to notice this one, but he never did.

Baby Girl did, though!

This was a really nice birthday.  My parents and sister were happy to see the kids, and the little party we had for her went very well.  She had a great time.

Catching Up

For the past month or so I have been meaning to write a couple of blog posts, but because I had put my blog link in a different folder it was "out of sight, out of mind" and I never remembered when I was actually at my computer.  It's now back where I can see it all the time, and now I'll take the time to catch up with what I've been meaning to write about.

First of all, I want to say a few things about the last blog post I wrote.  What it says now is how it should have always been written, but that's the edited version.  My first version had negative and, as my husband put it, "snarky" comments about the LDS church, and it offended him... and he's not easily offended.  As soon as he told me how he felt, I edited out more than half of what I wrote.  But it wasn't soon enough-- his sisters had already read it as well, and after reading it they deleted my blog from the list on their own blogs.  When I saw that all three of them had removed my blog from theirs, it hurt a lot; I took it to mean that because I voiced some of my opinions about the church-- of which they all are members-- that they no longer cared enough about me or Mc or our kids to keep reading my blog.  One of them explained in a comment why she would no longer read my blog, and it made me cry-- not only because of what she said but because to me it meant that our family was no longer important to her because of my views on the church, and I thought her sisters felt the same way she did.

Another of his sisters called me tonight and we talked for a while.  I haven't spent a lot of time around the three of Mc's sisters together, and because I know they are alike in many ways I mistakenly thought that they all felt the same way about my post and that together they had decided to reject me because of my anti-Mormon-sounding opinions.  But I was wrong.  Mc's sister explained to me that, for different reasons, all three of them decided separately that they didn't want to read my blog anymore, and she explained her reasons to me.  I was very glad to hear that for her it had nothing to do with not caring about my family anymore, that she still very much wants to know how we're doing.  It was nice to talk with her and to understand where she was coming from.

And I realized that I need to be more considerate of the people who might read my blog, because I don't want my thoughts or opinions to come across as harsh or confrontational or offensive.  I'm not a confrontational person, but it's easy to get too opinionated about something I feel strongly about, especially over text.  So I've decided to keep this blog as a place where I write updates on our little family and I'll mix in some other things here and there that are on my mind, but I'll be considerate of readers while I do it.

So, what's been going on with us?  I'll go down the list.  :)

Mc
He still likes his job and the people he works for.  He's very good at what he does, and the people he works with recognize that.  He still gets to work from home one day a week, and that's really nice for all of us.  The kids love to play with him and on him, and he makes them laugh.  He's a really good dad.  He and I still like to play video games together when the kids are asleep, and it's nice to have this hobby that we share together.

Me
In a week and a half, I'll be starting a cooking class at a culinary school.  It's called the "Practical Series" and it's one night a week for 24 weeks, and I'll be learning techniques for cooking all kinds of food.  Last year Mc's work set up an afternoon where they went to this culinary school and learned how to cook a few things from the owner of the school, and the guy really knows what he's talking about and Mc was impressed.  I won't go into it here, but I hate the degree that I graduated college with, and I realized a few months ago that if Mc were to die or somehow not be able to work, I have no practical skills that I can fall back on to help support our family.  So we'll all benefit from these cooking classes right now and forever, and if I need to get a job sometime in the future, I'll have something I can actually do.

Baby Girl

She is growing up so fast, and she's happy and healthy.  She will be 3 years old next week, and I'll post about her birthday next weekend if I get the chance.  She's learning to read, and I can tell she has such a desire to learn, it's amazing what this kid retains!  She has memorized 2 Strawberry Shortcake books that I've been reading to her for the past couple of weeks at night before bed, and she now recites them to me and I only need to occasionally prompt her when she can't remember the exact wording.  She has been a really picky eater the past 7 or 8 months, but maybe my cooking classes can help with that.  She's such a smart, talkative, sweet, affectionate girl, and we love her very much.

Little One

He is such a strong little boy.  He's 20 months old, and he loves to spend his time climbing and running and jumping.  He's a very good eater, and he's a happy and content child.  The problem, and what has been very hard for Mc and me to deal with lately, is that his communication skills are basically nonexistent.  And while he's not bothered by it because we know what he needs and we give it to him, it still bothers us that he's not talking yet when we know he should be, and that he doesn't engage us in his play.  So Mc and I are going to take some classes that will teach us how to help our little boy communicate with us.  It's going to require a lot of work on our part, but it'll absolutely be worth it.  He's a sweet, funny, strong, active boy, and we love him so much.

The Family
For the past couple of weeks, the weather has only been in the 90's, and so pretty soon we'll be able to let the kids play outside during the day and we can start taking walks in the evenings again and taking the kids to the park.  Growing up in CA, I never knew what it was like to live in a climate where you don't leave your house during the day because of the heat.  Now I know, and my question is: why do so many people live here?!

Women and the Priesthood

This upcoming weekend is the semiannual General Conference for the LDS church.  For those who don't know, each General Conference has 5 sessions total, and each session is 2 hours long-- 2 general sessions on Saturday, then a priesthood session just for the men on Saturday evening, and then 2 more general sessions on Sunday.

Yesterday Mc was talking to me about where he and some of his friends would watch the priesthood session of Conference this Saturday since it's now being broadcast through BYU TV.  He thought of going to the house of one of our friends, and I was surprised to hear that this friend of ours actually wants to watch it because he's usually very opposed to that session.  He sees it as the leaders of the church lecturing the men to not watch pornography, which topic they cover every single time, and yet women are never told how important sex is to their husbands and that they should have it with them more often; and when they're not talking about that, he feels that they're lecturing about how the men of the church are all terrible fathers and church members and that they need to do better.  So at first I was puzzled, but then I found out why he wants to watch the priesthood session this time.

Right now there is a protest going on in Utah by many women of the church who want to be allowed to have tickets to go to the priesthood session of Conference.  Here is a link to a short news article about it:
http://fox13now.com/2013/08/30/group-of-mormon-feminists-push-to-be-part-of-priesthood-meeting-at-general-conference/
Our friend wants to watch the priesthood session to see if they'll say anything about this protest on the news or mention it in the Conference session.  I'm guessing that in the session they'll just go on like usual as if nothing is happening.

The group organizing this protest is called Ordain Women, and it's a group of women (and men) who want equality in the church regarding the priesthood.  In the LDS church the priesthood is the power and authority to act in God's name, and there are certain callings (sets of responsibilities) that are only available to priesthood holders... meaning that they're only available to men.  Rather than giving a summary of what this group is about, here is the link to their Frequently Asked Questions page:
http://ordainwomen.org/faq/
While having the priesthood was never something I wanted or felt like I should have, I understand their arguments and their reasons.

In the past the church has bent to political and social pressures to change their policies, such as with polygamy and with only white men being allowed to have the priesthood.  I won't use this blog to bash the church, I'm just stating these things as facts.  But my feeling is that eventually women will be allowed to have the priesthood, just as eventually men of every color were allowed to have the priesthood.  We'll see; time will tell.
